192 Deaths in 9 Days: Homeless in Delhi Shelters Suffer Amid Heat Wave
From June 11 to June 19, 192 homeless people died in Delhi due to a heatwave.
As Delhi experiences a dramatic rise in its temperature, the homeless living in the city’s DUSIB (Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board) shelters are living in inhabitable conditions. The Centre for Holistic Development issued a report on 19 June, which says that 192 homeless people died in Delhi during the heatwave between 11 June and 19 June. The Quint’s ground reportage unearthed the possible reasons.
Cases of heat-related illnesses, hospitalisations, and fatalities have shot up like never before in Delhi. While elderly people and children tend to be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses, doctors tell FIT that they have been seeing patients in all age groups, especially those who spend a long time outdoors like guards, labourers, and long-distance commuters.
