Scams Are Getting Smarter — But So Are We
If you've been scammed or successfully thwarted one, share your story with us!
Dear Reader,
We’ve all been there — getting unexpected calls and messages offering flashy job opportunities, big and quick returns on small investments, or an “urgent” requirement to verify your personal details. These scams are designed to trick you before you even realise what is happening. They are ever-evolving, and in a moment of panic or even inattention, it is too easy for even the most well-informed individual to fall into the fraudster’s web of deceit.
Statistically Speaking
The headlines have been rife with 'digital arrests', 'UPI scams', 'job scams', 'IVR scams', 'pig butchering', 'investment scams' and more. According to data cited by the Home Ministry's India Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), India lost around Rs 11,333 crore to cyber fraud between January and September 2024. Scams related to stock trading topped the list, incurring a loss of Rs 4636 crore, followed by investment scams of Rs 3216 crore. There was also a significant soar in 'digital arrest' complaints, which accounted for a loss of Rs 1616 crore.
Data compiled by the National Cyber Reporting Platform (NCRP) says 17,10,505 cybercrime complaints were received last year.
