This is the story of an antique mirror that has witnessed the rise and fall of empires.
Crafted by Ustaad Azhar Ali in Shahjahanabad, the mirror once adorned the royal court of the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar. For a fleeting moment, it reflected the grandeur of the Mughal court — but history soon turned dark.
In 1857, as Bahadur Shah Zafar’s forces clashed with the British, the mirror trembled at the horrors of war. The empire was crushed, the emperor exiled to Rangoon, and the mirror abandoned in a dark cellar.
Decades later, in 1919, the mirror was unearthed once more — this time to find itself in the possession of General Dyer, just before another dark chapter in history would unfold.
